At five months pregnant with my first child I was working as a junior. architect at a premier architectural firm somewhere in Makati, circa 1980's. How premiere? Suffice to say we designed Ali Mall and Megamall. That architectural firm may well be the happiest architectural firm that side of Makati. A large percentage of our draftsmen were senior students from the University of Santo Tomas and one can just imagine the racket these "boys" made - myself and 4 other girl architects included.

The design and drafting area always had a festive mood. Everyone was happy - talking, eating, smoking, singing, doing school plates, putting on make-up, selling jewelries, pacifying number 2's (mistresses), and more. Sometimes, we also do some actual work especially if the boss was around. Oh we were a productive lot alright. It's just that we prefer to do and finish our work on overtime pay. On occasion, one or two of the UST students would light up a joint. Since the area was centralized, everyone would be affected by the pungent smoke. In no time at all, everyone, including our old HR person would be grinning from ear to ear. . Because of this occasional "high" sessions and the drafting difficulties - big tummy in the way - I was having, I was forced to file a super duper early maternity leave. I would not want my first born to have a bumpy head and be a joint addict in the end.

It was a sad day at the office when I packed my technical pens and pencils. I cleared my desk and drafting table. Rolled up the finished sheet and gave it to the sr. architect. How can I not miss this bunch? What will I do in my in-laws' house 24/7? OMG! Will they continue to feed me adobong uwang and paksiw na palos? Oh well. I survived.
