The main stimulus in milk production is suckling, so the sooner the baby is put to your breasts, the better. It is important to get yourself and the baby in the right positions. Make yourself comfortable and support his head with one arm. Make sure his nose is not obstructed. Hold the breast so that the nipple stands out and touch his cheek with it, near his mouth. He will usually respond by turning towards the nipple and taking it to his mouth. Do not squeeze his cheek! If he does not want to take it, then first: he's not hungry; second: he does not like your nipple. Don't be discouraged though. Keep on trying.
I was all set at breastfeeding. The only problem was, the baby did not want to breastfeed. I have tried everything to encourage her to breastfeed, but she just didn't like it. My infant child preferred the bottle for faster rate of feeding. I tried to "starve" her so that she would take my nipple but it was just a losing battle. My eldest preferred bottled milk and that was that!
