Because of my early maternity leave during my first pregnancy, I was confined or jailed or isolated in my in-laws' house for a longer time than expected. My hubby and I were staying in one big bedroom while his parents, two brothers and two sisters occupied the other four bedrooms respectively, with 2 to spare. The moment hubby leaves in the morning for work, I start counting the hours for his arrival. There was just nothing to do. The house and its extended household was big so that there was a retinue of helpers. There was no one to talk to. There was nothing to watch on tv - no cable yet. Computers and internet were things unheard of. What the heck! It was still Martial law and you can't do anything crazy like stay out late at night. Curfew at midnight. So, I ate and read books.
I tried to get to know all the employees downstairs but it was a losing battle. There was just too many. I tried getting to know my in-laws but it takes months, years even, to have a real close relationship. One lunch time,my brother-in-law, the youngest, graciously offered that I sit beside him. I did and I was grateful that he was trying to be cordial to me. The dinner plate was facing down. When I lifted it up, guess what I saw sitting on my dinner plate? - my brother-in-law's dentures. For him that was funny. For me that was rude. I was sad for company.

It must be hard to adjust. Buti na lang I don't have in laws that I live with kundi baka nabaliw na ko.
ReplyDeleteDentures...on your plate...ewww talaga. Binigyan mo ba ng upper cut? Hahaha...

well I hope, you're okay now with your in laws, it's been three decades already :)
ReplyDeletehuling: medyo naive pa ako nun eh. it was hard adjusting. sala sa init, sala sa lamig. kaya nga sabi ko sa mga girls ko, no living with inlaws when you marry.
ReplyDeletemanilenya: i eventually adjusted. =)
