I have always wanted twins. I was half-hoping that my first pregnancy would result in twins - which of course did not and none of my subsequent pregnancies did either. What are the chances of twins in my case? Genetics wise, zero, as there is no known twins in my side of the family. One pregnancy in 80 results in twins. Triplets occur once in every 7,000 births and quadruplets about once in 250,000 births. There are known quintuplets, sextuplets and even septuplets that have survived. These last three types of multiple births are greatly due to taking fertility drugs. Multiple pregnancies could occur in different ways. More than one egg may be fertilized resulting in non-identical twins or what we call fraternal twins. Or a single egg may be divided into two after fertilization, resulting in identical twins - maternal twins. Three-fourth of twins born are fraternal. The twins may or may not be of the same sex. Chances of premature birth are higher with twins.
After having my first child, my wish of having twins vanished.. for good.
