Michael Phelps is now 3 out of 3 in his quest to beat Mark Spitz's 36 year old record of 7 golds in the Olympic. He won the 200 meter freestyle finishing in 1 minute, 42.96 seconds, breaking the mark 1:43.86 he set at last year's world championships. Phelps' Events are: 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4x100m freestyle relay, 4x200m freestyle relay, 4x200m medley. Done events are the 200m freestyle, 400m IM, and 400mX100 freestyle. He was slated to swim the 4x200m freestyle relay but he did not.
Phelps also qualified in the preliminaries in the 100m freestyle but again opted out. He might also back out of Thursday's 200m backstroke. At this point, Phelps is using his brain in choosing his events. I think he opted out of the 4x200m freestyle because the finals for that event and the 200m butterfly will be held one hour apart. There's no way Phelps can recover from his 200m free relay then go all out for his 200m butterfly. So what other event will Phelps swim? The 4x200m medley?

I really hope he breaks the record. It's good to see him win.
