Hushed lies the Holy City
Buried in silent sleep
Only the watchful angels
their ceaseless vigil keep
Ever to eastward gazing
Waiting the signs of dawn
Oh how the earth should slumber
of this First Christmas morn....
Wake oh ye people waken
Heed what the morning brings
Heaven and earth rejoicing
Cometh the King of Kings...
Buried in silent sleep
Only the watchful angels
their ceaseless vigil keep
Ever to eastward gazing
Waiting the signs of dawn
Oh how the earth should slumber
of this First Christmas morn....
Wake oh ye people waken
Heed what the morning brings
Heaven and earth rejoicing
Cometh the King of Kings...
And so the song goes. This song has long been sung by our church's choir almost every first Sunday of December. The song is solemn, catchy and highly inspirational. I think my Christmas season will not start unless I sing or hear this song first. The first Christmas Morn should serve as an inspiration to one and all. The song was composed and written by Ernest Newton and Arthur Chapman in 1911.
