I was watching a rerun of NCIS where a 'thief' was scanning (from a far) the the credit cards of potential victims. The scanner used by the thief is a method of electronic pickpocketing where the credit card numbers are easily revealed to a high-tech thief without him even coming near the victim. Surely this is fiction... or not!
It is a fact that new credit cards and even passports are fitted with minute two-way radios called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). It is a technology that makes use of radio waves to transfer any data from an electronic tag. It is also a fact that some RFID tags can be read several meters away from the reader (or thief!). This technology makes it easy for innovative thief to electronically pick your credit card numbers!
It is a good thing that you can actually buy an rfid blocking wallet online. This type of wallet claims to block any unauthorized scanning of your wallet which could lead to theft. I think I should get one.
